Why "Imperative" Records?

People have asked why I use the name Imperative Records. Here's the story: A few years ago I was watching a documentary on Kris Kristofferson, where he talked about William Blake and (paraphrasing here) that the artist must use his or her God-given talent to bring light into the world or they would be eternally damned. Words to that effect. That had a big impact on me and my decision to produce my own CDs. In other words, there was a "moral imperative" involved -- hence the name Imperative Records.

The motto ("Get it - it's IMPERATIVE") came about because I wanted to have a catch-phrase as cool as Stiff Records ("If it ain't STIFF, it ain't worth a f*ck"). The logo was designed by artist Holly Goldsmith, wife of singer/songwriter Jeff Gold. She pretty much nailed it with her first attempt. Thanks, Holly.

A footnote: That Kristofferson documentary has just been re-released on DVD.
